Rietveld Shröderhuis

House on a leafy street just outside Utrecht, designed by Gerrit Rietveld for Truus Shröder and constructed in 1924. Sliding walls and shifting planks make use of all-important space, all meticulously intentional, a red and blue chair made of plywood and beech, thick strips of primary colours, cabinets built with delicate precision, obligatory over-the-shoe pointed slippers ensuring the floor remains in good condition, and a spreekbuis for the postman to roar into the space upstairs, his voice spiralling up through a thin metal tube.
